Identity verification at Stripe: what you need to know and what to expect

During RecordFlower onboarding, you complete a one-time identity verification with Stripe. What does that verification involve, why is it required, and how does it work?

What is identity verification?

Identity verification is a standard verification procedure that Stripe requires of all sellers who receive payments. Its purpose is to prevent fraud and financial crime. This is a legal requirement, not something RecordFlower imposes on its own.

What Stripe asks for

Stripe asks for a valid form of ID, your address details, and your bank account number. In some cases, Stripe also asks for additional documents, such as a Chamber of Commerce extract for business sellers. The verification process runs entirely within the Stripe environment and takes a few minutes on average.

One-time and required

Verification is a one-time step. Once approved, you can receive payments immediately. Without completed verification, your Stripe account is not active and buyers cannot pay you. Make sure to complete this early in onboarding, so your store is fully operational as soon as it goes live.

What does this mean for you?

Identity verification is a standard and necessary step for every seller who receives payments online. It is one-time, fast, and handled entirely through Stripe.
