International shipping and your webshop: what to watch out for

You've decided to sell internationally through your RecordFlower webshop. That opens your store to buyers in dozens of countries. But there are a few practical things to keep in mind.

Setting shipping costs per country

Through your dashboard, you set your shipping rate per country. Make sure your rates are current, since shipping costs vary considerably by destination and carrier. An incorrect rate can lead to loss-making orders. Adjust your rates as soon as your carrier changes its costs.

Customs and import duties

Shipping outside the EU may involve customs charges and import duties. These are the buyer's responsibility, unless you state otherwise. Mention this clearly in your webshop or shipping policy, so buyers aren't caught off guard.

Packaging for international shipping

Vinyl is fragile. Especially with international shipping, where packages get handled more often, sturdy packaging material is essential. Strong cardboard, bubble wrap and rigid mailers are the standard in the vinyl world. Your reputation as a seller partly depends on the condition a record arrives in.

What does this mean for you?

Selling internationally offers great opportunities, but requires a well-thought-out shipping policy. Set your rates and terms clearly, and you avoid problems.
